Goodbye Rufus

Writing has taken a back seat this week. Between coming down with the flu and saying goodbye to my beloved dog of ten years, Rufus (after many vet visits) I decided this just wasn't meant to be a productive writing week.

I can't upload a photo of Rufus, so I wanted to share some verses the vet gave me to say goodbye to my doggy friend (Rufus had a bone tumour).

My Friend

When the time comes if it should be that I grow frail and weak

and pain should keep me from my sleep,

then you should do what must be done

for this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.

For more this day, more than all the rest,

your love and friendship stands the test.

We've had so many happy years,

what is to come can hold no fears.

Would you want me to suffer so?

When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend,

only stay with me till the end

and hold me firm and speak to me, until my eyes no longer see.

It is a kindness that you do to me.

Although my tail its last has waved from pain

and suffering I have been saved.

Do not grieve, it should be you

who must decide this thing to do.

We've been so close, we two these years.

Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Sorry about your loss Mel. A few years ago, our Rottie too had bone cancer and we had to farewell him also. A very sad time indeed.

What a wonderful vet! Nothing easy about saying goodbye to a friend, is there... We had to put down our beautiful boy Lad last year, and after being sad for so long, we can laugh with different memories now.

Hi Eleni,
Rufus was a part Rotty too =) and very very loyal. I guess animals remind us what devotion is really about!
Hi Cathy! Long time no see!! Was Lad your Alsation? I know you love your dogs, so I feel for you =)

Hi Mel

Very sad to hear about your Rufus - we farewelled our dear friend Wallace up to dog heaven three weeks ago now, so I know exactly how you feel. Lovely thought from your vet. I think you have to be really special to be a vet.

Hi Fi,
I totally agree with you. Vets have one tough job, but giving out a verse I think makes it just that little more personalised and eases the trauma.
Perhaps Rufus and Wallace and Lad are all playing happily somewhere now =)

Damaris - coming soon!

The fourth book of the Alien Fugitive series, Damaris, is coming at the end of this month! I'm just now finishing this book and puttin...
